Once, a famous Mexican TV host said on a national show that the Yankees see our people in the elusive little mouse cartoon, whom they call greasers (not coloreds, less than coloreds: 4th class citizens). I don't know, but maybe the shot points in another direction: the little mouse refers more to the small Mexican economy than to the little people. The average stupid American thinks Mexico (small business) is just Monterrey.
